What should I do with it? Hmm...paperweight? I have a 2-3 old PCs with about the same specs as yours. I used to run a MUSH on one of them for three years (did a great job too) before moving it to a dedicated server. That one still has RedHat 9 on it and I use it if I need a simple Linux machine to drive serial terminals or provide some sort of modem interface to old computers. The other computers, however, just sit around. I have way too many PCs these days to really use them all. Here are some of my best ideas: 1. Install Win98 on it and use it to play old Windows/DOS Games 2. Put Linux on it and use it to learn the eccentricities of command-line living. 3. Run a telnet BBS on it 4. Run a MUSH/MUD/MOO/Whatever on it. Does it have a network card? 5. Put a bigger hard drive in it and use it as a network file server. 6. Use it to drive old RS-232 serial terminals. 7. Use it as a webcam server. 8. Use it to power a scrolling LCD sign that grabs info off the internet. 9. Throw it off a building and watch it go *SPLAT*. --- Ok, those are some ideas for now. Let us know what you come up with! RedWolf

I just tried that before you read the post. Unfortunately, it was an HP recovery disk that ONLY works on HPs (because I forgot to rename the HD "HP_PAVILLION") so now I'm stuck with an OSless box. Of course this naturally leads to... 2. Put Linux on it and use it to learn the eccentricities of command-line living.
I'm gonna get the Knoppix ISO I guess (as the thing only boots from the CD now) and let you know how that works. I can't do any of your other steps except for #9 (and BOY do I want to, but my parent's would be pissed) because it has no modem, and is in a room with no phoneline. I can get a Knoppix ISO and a REAL *cracked* Win98 ISO so I can do some shit with this box... Thanks for your ideas, man!

OK, I have 98 working on it! Win98 can be considered abandonware, so I'm gonna link to the torrent, Redwolf if you don't approove you can delete the link, I understand. http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3504746Read the readme in the ISO, easy as pie.

Hey, I don't care. Out of the 1 bajillion people who use/used Windows 98, I think about five actually bought it. It's a crappy-ass operating system anyway, but it's a great "bridge" to semi-modern computing that allows you to play old DOS games. Just don't install a bunch of apps and hopefully it won't crash on you every 24 hours like it does for everyone else. RedWolf

LOL, actually, the only time it's crashed so far on me is when I PURPOSEFULLY typed "C:\AUX\AUX" (a WIN98 crash code).
I can't wait to get DOOM on it, but I have to get more CD-Rs (I lost my collector's edition CD  ).
EDIT: Screw DOOM... I'M PUTTING BLOOD ON IT!!!

The first computer my family had was something that ran at 2mhz. But, it had a "turbo" button that would double the clock speed! Games just FLEW with that thing on!

A few weeks ago I set up one of my old 386s to play old DOS games on. I put a network card in there a long time ago and use Microsoft DOS client software to connect to my more modern computers to copy things around and play games off of there. It's awesome. I've got a Soundblaster-compatible, 130meg HD, 4 megs of RAM, and two floppies (5 1/4 and 3.5" of course). I'm not sure why I never put a CD-ROM drive in there. That's next on my list because I definitely have some old spares. That will help for transferring large games when the network is unavailble. Also, I have this neat old "1000 Shareware Games" CD that I used to play a lot many, many years ago. They're all DOS games that you can play from a menu directly off of the CD. It's awesome. I really do need to get that CD drive in there. The machine runs Windows 3.1 like a champ, of course, so I might play some vintage Windows games as well. Fun times.

But in the meantime, you can probably find Commander Keen (shareware) many places all over the net. If for some reason you can't, just let me know and I'll find a copy from my archives for you.
