What do other folks recommend as a telnet client for Windows? especially for use with BBCs... and that may play well with vista...

CRT from VanDyke technologies is pretty good. But it's not free. I use an older version of that for BBSes. http://www1.vandyke.com/products/crt/Also, PuTTY is a no-brainer in terms of free telnet or SSH clients. I use PuTTY for all my SSH and MUSH stuff. You should try it. http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/It will do the job. The next trick is to use a fixed-width font that supports IBM extended ASCII characters well, like the "gradient" block characters that are so essential in ANSI art. I think MS Terminal supports them. When you've got your client up and running, telnet to cavebbs.homeip.net port 23 (my telnet BBS) to try it out.

Putty is an awesome telnet/ssh client. It's one of the first things I install on any Windows setup.

I recently discovered SyncTERM, and it is amazing. It might work with Vista but I can't confirm. From their site: # Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSD, OS X , and FreeBSD # X/Y/ZModem up/downloads # Runs in full-screen mode on ALL platforms (ALT-Enter switches modes) # *nix versions will run using SDL, X11, or using curses # Full ANSI-BBS support # Full CGTerm Commodore 64 PETSCII support # Full Atari 8-bit ATASCII support # DoorWay support # Support for IBM low and high ASCII including the face graphics (☺ and ☻) and card symbols (♥, ♦, ♣, and ♠) which so many other terms have problems with (may not work in curses mode... depends on the terminal being used). # Phone books # Multiple screen modes (80x25, 80x28, 80x43, 80x50, 80x60, 132x25, 132x28, 132x30, 132x34, 132x43, 132x50, 132x60) # ANSI Music (through the sound card if installed) # Telnet, RLogin, SSH, RAW, modem, and direct serial connections # Auto-login with Synchronet RLogin # Large Scrollback # Mouse-driven menus # Copy/Paste # Supports character pacing for ANSI animation as well as the VT500 ESC[*r sequence to allow dynamic speed changes # Comes with 37 standard fonts and allows the BBS to change the current font *and* upload custom fonts. I am thoroughly impressed.

hmm.. well i got putty, now i am having trouble getting it to show the extended ASCII characters correctly.
I did change the font to "terminal". I guess i will have to fiddle with it a little more to get the ASCII art to show up in all the glory it was meant to be.
@RedWolf, sorry i keep loggin' on and off your BBS. heh

i figured it out!
to display the old IBM pc character set correctly, i had to change the controlling character set translation (Window->Translation->Character Set Tr...) to 'cp437'. now it works great.
I may still try out syncTERM, but i like the idea of putty just because i like programs that do more than one thing. more programs = more clutter, though i would say a bigger problem is having several programs that do pretty much the same thing... Now that i think of it i already have a ftp client and i don't really need a ssh client...

That does seem to work with PuTTY. Thanks for the tip! I didn't know this, but cp437 stands for MS-DOS Code Page 437, the IBM Extended ASCII character set: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437By the way, Silence: are you having trouble with the BBS? I did notice a number of connects/disconnects. If you were just testing out your terminal program, that's ok too. But if you need help, let me know.

You're slowly turning me into a SyncTERM evangelist! I never knew I had it in me. Don't get me wrong, I use PuTTY on a near-daily basis, but SyncTERM can do telnet/SSH/rlogin, and if you're crazy enough, you can do dialup or serial connections. It also displays ANSI with correct original 16 colors, whereas by default, PuTTY uses Windows' color palette, which is incorrect (fixable with Grymmjack's color fix, but I can't seem to find it anymore). And SyncTERM supports X/Y/Zmodem file transfers, though I don't know why you would need to download anything from a BBS. EDIT: Here's a link to Grymmjack's color fix.

I still use QModem Pro 95 because there are boards out there that runs RIP. I wish it was still around today.

QModem Pro makes its way back onto my computer whenever I get a craving to play Tele-Arena. I still have some ancient character rerolling scripts for it. I never developed any feelings for RIP. None of the local bulletin boards put much effort into their menus and it was always a little too slow for my liking. Did you ever try out RoboTerm for RoboFX BBS? I think it could do VGA resolutions and colors, where Ripscrip was limited to EGA. It was even slower, though.
