I was attempting to connect and set up an account, but I can't seem to get past the "Send Red Wolf a letter" section. I'm just using the OSX terminal (bash).
What happens when you get that far?
It looks similar to the UNIX editor vi. I can type but none of the commands appear to work, even the "help" command listed on the top of the screen.

Hmm.  That's probably the fullscreen message editor while leaving a validation message.

Try typing "/s" (without the quotes) and hitting enter.  That will save the message and let you move on.

Barring that, try another terminal program.
