This is the process of me creating my NES/Controller coffee table.  I got this idea from g4tv, but wanted one of my own, that was small enough for one person to play. (G4's was 4'x8').  I also thought it'd be a cool idea to mount an NES into the front of the controller, and make the controller work the NES.  And THEN I remembered my own personal NES/DVD player that i got the idea to make from the very website that you are on right now (thank you very much for your help, MR. Benj Edwards).  I then thought how awesome it would be to have BOTH the NES and the DVD player mounted at once. My plan behind this is to have people ask me why I need two NES's, at which point I tell them to push the Reset button on one of them, thus opening the tray.

Ok, enough of the needless chat, here is my roughly finished NES Controller/coffee table.  All I have left to do is paint it.

Here I have everything drawn out, ready to cut. I realize you can hardly see the pencil, but trust me, its there.

This is the trim piece that goes around the outer edge of the controller.  On the actual controller this part is a little higher than the rest of the controller, so  I had to cut this out of a thin sheet of wood.

Everything cut out and all the raised parts glued on!

This is the D-pad button. notice how the arrows are also set into the wood, and the center hole rounded out (as best as I could) to add realistic appeal.

The start/select buttons look like this

And Presto! a button that pushes!

A/B buttons.  If you can see it, these buttons are bowl shaped in the center, just like on the real controller!  I owe a big thank you to my Dad/CNC Toolmaker for this one.

Bottom half of the controller.

Wiring it all up to work....tons of fun Sad

This little contraption saved my life.  Since all the ground connections ran back to a single point on the circuit board, I was able to tie them all together into one single wire to solder.

And...all wired up!

Hey, that looks like a giant NES Controller!

In my opinion, the coolest part of this entire project.  NES on the left, NES/DVD player on the right.

Just to prove that I'm not lying  Wink

Well, there you have it! I know I still have to paint it, and put together some table legs(which I will post pictures of as soon as it happens), but as far as the construction of the controller, the hardest part is done.

:::::::::UPDATE 6/07/08:::::::::::::::::
Here it is primed and drying! Ill post pics as I get steps done that way you guys can kinda feel like you are with me as im doing it   Wink

Buttons!

SEXY!!!! Mario Jump Blue

note to self:permanently attach buttons AFTER painting

I hope you all enjoyed my pictures as much as I enjoyed making the project!
Feel free to ask any questions you may have, Im an open book!

do me a favour, post some blueprints/dimensions for the controller itself.. I am actually looking to build my own Cheesy let me know

Just one question

Did you have to modify the NES itself so that the controller is wired internally? Also... would be sweet to get the DVD player remote in it aswell Tongue

Yeah, I tried the DVD remote thing when I made the DVD Player, but Im just not good enough at soldering Undecided.  On the NES control panel all the contacts ran back to a row of solder points that I could tap into, but on my DVD remote it wasnt the same.  Id have to scratch away at the surface of the panel and expose some of the metal and solder to that. I just couldnt get a good solder joint so I gave up.

Also, I didnt modify the NES, Im just going to run the controller wire out the back of the table and loop it around.  It wont look as nice, but since I made the  DVD player, Im now down to only two NES's. One is an old toploading one, and the other is the one in the table. So I didnt want to risk ruining one.

but if you want to send me one, ill sure try!  Wink

Awesome work, Benwich.  Thanks for posting that here.

The addition of a NES DVD player is a nice touch too. Smiley

Please post some more pics when you finish the whole project (i.e. after you paint it).  I might even put a note about it up on VC&G.

Well, as far as blue prints go....there are none, lol.  What I did for the dimensions was find a multiplier to be able to scale everything up.

I knew I wanted my table to be 4ft long, so I got out my dial-calipers and measured the length of the actual controller, and then divided that into 48in.  It came out to like 9.786 or something like that.  Then I sat and measured everything that I possibly could on the controller and multiplied it by my multiplier to find the actual dimension.

instead of an NES, i'll throw a PC in there with a DOS emu starting up ASAP... this could work.

I have a spare PC in my closet.. what do you guys think?

::::::::UPDATE::::::::

As of the time I posted this thread, I had not actually played the controller in its completed form; only by touching the loose ends of the wires together. The day that I posted this, I had to rewire the NES controller board because I bridged something the first time that I shouldnt have (an insight into my soldering skills, lol) and when i plugged it in, the game thought the right button on the dpad was always pushed in. But I found time to put it all back together today and was able to play it as it was meant to play! I must say that it was the greatest thing ever!!! I was in my garage with the door open, and every time I heard a car come I ran into the middle of the street and jumped out in front of the car, and then made the driver get out and come play on the controller with me.  I did this until the one of the cars I leaped in front of happened to be a Police car police. He didnt share my excitement Undecided.

So now that it works, I will jump on getting it painted and putting some legs on it so I can get a vid for you guys!
