This system is accessed over the Internet using your ISP but has some similarities to a BBS or old online service. It contains over 500 pages with no advertising and works under Windows (95 and up) or Tandy DeskMate (a DOS GUI):

Update: It's free now, though without a lot of the benefits that were included before.

It's also really weird.  It's a lot like one man's private WWW without much info on it.  I checked it out last month after you first posted -- thanks for bringing this to my attention.

It has been improved a lot recently. Now there's over 630 pages, an encyclopedia with 1,200+ entries, dozens of DOS software downloads, a search function, a database of store prices, a user-to-user messaging system, and a ratings database, among other things. The access software was enhanced as well, especially in the last couple versions.

I just checked it out.  Sadly, it doesn't seem to want to work on my computer.  All I get is a plain grey screen.

That's odd. Does the menubar show up at the top? You should be able to select "Register" or "Log in" from the "Main" menu. What OS are you using?

I'm on Windows 7.

I can register and log in, but after that... nothing.

I tried using all the different menus, and nothing seems to make anything happen.

EDIT:

I notice that if I click on random parts of the screen, the title bar changes from STARTPG to something else.  But aside from that, still the plain grey screen.

EDIT (again):

I just tried dropping the resolution from 1920 x 1200 to 800 x 600, since I noticed in the readme that high resolutions were not tested, and still nothing.

Someone on Yahoo Groups reported a similar problem with Windows 7, now that I think of it. Apparently the program is working but its text and graphics cannot display. Leave it to Microsoft to make something that works under 95 through XP not work... Does it have any "compatibility" modes you could try running it under?

I tried just about every single compatibility mode.  Nothing worked.  I'm debating using my laptop, but it too runs Windows 7, so I seriously doubt it would work either.

Sorry it didn't work. Thanks for attempting to use it, I will post a notice about Windows 7 incompatibility so that other people will know that it won't work if they don't have Windows 95 through XP or DeskMate 3.x.

It's fine.  Maybe one of these days I can fix my old Windows XP machine and try it out on there.  Of course, I don't know what's wrong with it, and it's been so long since I've tried booting it.  Still, it does seem like an interesting concept, and I was actually thinking about making something similar back in high school.
