Can't have a modern gaming thread without talking about this lovely gem. If you don't know about it, it's essentially a VERY open-world game. It sets you in the middle of a HUMONGOUS randomly generated world, where the point is to just survive, and build. Just about everything you see in the game (except for the bedrock at the bottom of the worlds) can be extracted and used or built with in many ways. And if it doesn't have a use, it probably will soon, since the game only recently went into beta. It is a wonderful game, and it is quite a surprise that it was essentially made by one person. It is both extremely simple, while also being very complex. I recommend that if you haven't already, you should buy it. It's only 15 Euro while it's in beta.

I love Minecraft and have played it quite a bit over the past 6 months. We should set up a VC&G community server so we can all get on at once.

That would be a good idea. Of course, who would serve it, what mods should be used, and would PvP be enabled?

All good questions. I would probably serve it, but I have not messed with any mods before. Do you recommend any?

The server I regular uses several. One of them is called Borderlands, which basically limits the world size so the server doesn't get overloaded and needs to be reset regularly. They also use another one (I don't know the name) which allows for "cauldrons" which you can use to create items which you normally can't. Another one creates a currency you can use to buy and sell items, as well as a MUD-style auction system. It's a lot more convenient than bartering. Before the beta re-implemented leaf decay, they also used one which caused the leaves to immediately fall after the tree was destroyed. There were also several others, but they were mostly on the moderator's side, so I don't know what exactly they did.

I know this thread is ancient, but I would be interested in playing some multiplayer Minecraft. On a related note, Terraria was released on Tuesday and it has a LOT in common with Minecraft. It's like 2D Minecraft with more adventuring:

It's about time someone made one of those. Believe it or not, I just started playing Terraria yesterday. It seems really cool, although I have not spent a lot of time with it yet.

Actually, I've seen a trailer for this game on Notch's twitter account. I'd buy it, but if I do, I'd be over my games budget for the month. Maybe next month..

You have a games budget? I need one of those! I snagged Terraria on release day under pressure from a friend, but hadn't had a chance to play it much.. until this evening. Another buddy of mine bought it and now it's suddenly three hours later. My mind has gone numb. I'm going to dream in pixels. Definitely try it multiplayer, it's a blast. Let me know if you want to play sometime.

I'm having trouble getting multiplayer in Terraria to work. No matter what I try, connection to port 31337 is always not accepted. Firewalls are open and everything. Any tips?

Are you hosting or joining another game? Firewalls are open, but do you have your router forwarding that port (assuming this isn't a LAN game)?

I just broke down and bought Terraria... It seems like a good game. I'm willing to play multiplayer.
