Ok, what are we talking about here? I remember playing Zork and HGttG, but I always considered them 'Text Based Adventures!' So is that what we are talking about here?

Well, actually, think of a text-based Everquest and you'd be on the right track.

A massively multiplayer text-adventure.

I'm not very acquainted with these, the only one I've played is FurryMUCK (as if you couldn't figure it out, I'm a furry, lol) and the only other one I've heard of is Meridian59 (altough that doesn't really count as it's a Graphical MUD).

I'm planning on writing more articles about MUSHes and MUDs in the future (including explanations of them for those who don't know), and that's why this forum is here.  I have run a MUSH myself for the last six years.  You can telnet to it here:

cavemush.com (port 6116)

Basically, a MUSH is a multi-user, text-based virtual world in which you can program, build, or manipulate anything you desire (given the game's settings) using an internal "softcode" programming language ("MUSHcode").

MUDs are typically text-based multi-player online role playing games.  They are indeed the precursors to today's graphical MMORPGs.
