Hey guys! I'm new here (I didn't know these forums existed until today.) Anyway I thought I'd make my first post a memorable one so I deciced to take a look at games from companies that aren't around anymore. My first is one about Sunsoft's 1988 classic Blaster Master. Think of it as a sort of Metroid in tank. You begin in your tank and must get to the boss's chamber in each level. Once you get to the chamber, you exit your tank and go on foot. The game switches to an overhead view similar to Bomberman. Defeat the boss and you can upgrade your tank to access new areas. There are a total of eight unique worlds to explore. This game also gave us one the NES's best known tricks where if you hit the boss in areas 2,4,6 and 7 with a grenade and pause the game, the boss will continue to take damage until it's dead. This game was fairly hard due to only giving you three lives and a few continues. Definitely worth tracking down and giving it a play.

I love Blaster Master. It's definitely a classic.
I remember that my brother ordered the game from Sears (or something similar) through the mail, and I was so proud that we had the game before it was widely available in stores (or so I thought, anyway). That was worth bragging about back then, as every new NES game was an event. (There was a time when I rented every new NES game that came out, eager to try it. Those were the days.)
Anyway, Blaster Master has awesome graphics, sound effects, and music. I think world two's music is my favorite (or is it world three?) It is very hard though, and I never got past world 3 or 4, although I haven't taken a crack at it in over ten years. My brother, whom I considered an expert video game player as a kid, could never beat the game either. I should play through it with save states just so I can see the end.
Sunsoft always made high quality games. If you liked Blaster Master, try Fester's Quest, which uses some of the same sound effects.

Sunsoft had some fantastic releases in that time. Both Blaster Master and Fester's Quest had amazing music and graphics, and were both extremely difficult (though I did manage to complete both). Blaster Master is definitely in my top 5 NES titles. Back when I had more time I built a mini-fansite about it. If you have a means of playing back NSF titles, pick up Blaster Master's music dump at Zophar.net. Level 6's music is my favorite. (as a matter of fact, I'm going to load it up in Audio Overload right now for some work music)The spritework is also fantastic. Definitely worth picking up and trying to play through.

Every once and a while I take a listen to my NSF file collection, and Blaster Master is always a game that I visit. Nice site, by the way. I like the Blaster Master-themed buttons. They'd work well as forum avatars.

I finally beat Blaster Master using an emulator (save states rock). It's my personal shame that I couldn't beat it on the original hardware. I hope we see a Virtual Console release so the more people can play it.

My brother also owned Blaster Master and we were never able to beat it. At least, not until the Game Genie hit the market. I can't imagine finishing it without cheating.
Wasn't it also true that if you accidentally paused the game while you were taking damage, it would drain your life, like those bosses? Am I remembering correctly?

Man, I'd like to see what's in your music collection.
This is just the stuff on my HD, I have like 17 CDs I haven't ripped yet: http://www.geocities.com/kitsunedarkstalker/music.htmAlso, not everything is titled right, so if you wonder what something is, let me know and I MIGHT be able to tell you.
