So on another forum I visit we were kinda having the same post your desktop thread (I swear, there's always a desktop thread and a "What Are You Listening To?" thread on every forum), and a dude there posted this desktop:

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t216/brynosaur/desktop52008.jpg?t=1211270543

I freaked out when I saw the icon on the left, six icons down.  Not overjoyed freaking, but like "WTF!?" freaking.

Then I checked, and yeah, it's real.

I'm still keeping Firefox 2, even though they claim Safari to be faster. I spent 2 days getting rid of all the Apple spyware off the machine, I'd be damned if I'd invite it back.

I've never been a fan. Safari for Windows had exposed vulnerabilities a few hours after release. Granted, it was a beta, but that didn't give a good initial impression. There were a couple more recent vulnerabilities too. And there's been talk about how it lacks phishing prevention and Extended Validation.

I also think it's shady how Safari is being bundled with iTunes and Quicktime..

I tried Safari for Windows when it was first released (when was it, last year?), and like others, I wasn't impressed.  There's absolutely no reason to use Safari when Firefox is around.  Firefox is just a stellar browser.

I never much liked Safari on the Mac either, though I guess it was the default browser on my iMac for a while.  As I recall, I was using Mozilla until Safari added tabbed browsing.  All this was when Firefox was still known as "Firebird" and was in an alpha state.

I'm not a fan of the KHTML rendering engine in Safari, or the general user interface of the browser. I prefer Gecko (mozilla engine), and use Camino for my Mac browsing needs. It's the lightning fast Mozilla browser that Firefox should be.

I remember using NCSA Mosaic and Netscape 1.1N back in the early 90s...how far this here Interweb thing has come.

I feel vulnerable when I browse with Safari (kind of like stock IE6). Maybe it's just me. I used Camino when I first got my MacBook Pro, but then I found Firefox 3 Beta and I haven't looked back. FF2 is a clunky piece of junk but FF3 is nice and speedy. I guess my biggest complaint about Camino is that I could not for the life of me get it to save my proxy settings; with Firefox it wasn't a problem. Camino would always erase my config after I closed the program, which quickly drove me crazy.

I think I still have a 1.44" floppy with Netscape 1.0. I might have to dig that out and try some websites. Wink

No matter what other people say... I am only going to trust Firefox... I love it. I went to my buddies house and he had IE and I refused to go on his computer until he got FF... long story short... he still has IE Sad

Well I'm glad we're all in agreement here: IE sucks.  In fact, they tried to un-suck it with IE 7 (I think?), but it still sucks.

I think we should all boycott websites that make you use IE.  I think my health insurance provider's online account management tool does.  And sadly, so does Netflix online movie viewing.

I too started with Mosaic and then Netscape 1.  Remember when every website had a Windows-gray background as a default?  That was before you could even specify a background color for a web page.  That made the abuses of background textures and images all the worse when they came into effect.  I know I was guilty of it. Smiley  See http://www.schmelicaborgan.com -- my first web site in its last incarnation.

Yes; we've come a long way.

You're the first person to ever mention the VC&G background pattern.  Do you like it?  Do you know what it is?

It is microchips.  If I had to put a more specific label, I would guess it's the memory bank of an early Apple (IIe?).

The only thing suckier is the PSP browser.

Hehe, microchips.  Well, they are ICs.  I can't remember from which board exactly now, but I seem to recall that I made the background from a picture I took of a Micro PDP-11 512k Q-bus memory board.  Either that or the CPU board.  It's worked out well though, no matter what the source.  I always worried that the background might be too dark though and not "happy" enough.
