Discussion Topic of the Week: What’s the silliest knock-off of a famous video game you can think of? (e.g. Donkey King)

KC Munchkin for the Odyssey. You don’t get a much more blatant ripoff than that game.

  2. Dennis Says:

Munchman for the TI-99 was pretty blatant as well, despite the wikipedia saying it was “loosely based on Namco’s Pac-Man”.

  3. Jaybee Says:

At least MunchMan tried to do something (slightly) different.
TI Invaders is so close to another popular game that ends with Invaders, I’m not sure how it ever cleared legal.

Square developed an odd little knock-off of Sega’s bizarre masterpiece “Space Harrier” for the NES called “3D World Runner.” Although it adds some item collection and jumping elements, the enemies are tiny and simplistic and the music is grating. It was somewhat interesting back in the day in its optional use of red-and-blue anaglyph 3D glasses.

“Donkey King” is a very silly name, but it is quite a good version of Donkey Kong. Also for the Color Computer was “Polaris” which is very much like Missile Command. It was well done, especially the controls. The analog joystick was the closest you could get to the original’s Trak Ball and you used 3 keyboard keys to fire from the bases allowing full silo management.

The game Pick Axe Pete! came to mind when Donkey Kong was mentioned. I recall Magnavox was promoting it pretty heavily as the reason to buy an Odessey2. Hard Hat Mack was a much better DK style game.
