[ Retro Scan of the Week ] ClayFighter Launch Ad

ClayFighter SNES Christmas 1993 Launch Ad Advertisement- 1993“Hey, watch the hair, man.”

My, oh my. What a blast I had with ClayFighter for the Super NES when it launched around this time 20 years ago — in December 1993.

I rented the game several times from Blockbuster and delighted my brother by forcing its Elvis-like character to jump repeatedly, eliciting a humorous”Uh-huh” sound every time. The graphics were great and the spirit of humor was plentiful in this claymation-based title.

The advertisement itself is a parody of an iconic coming-soon ad for Mortal Kombat on home consoles from 1993. Interestingly, I’ve never featured that Mortal Kombat ad in a RSOTW — that may have to be remedied soon.

Discussion Topic of the Week: What’s the best fighting game for the Super NES?

Probably Super Street Fighter II although I was disappointed that the SNES never got Super Turbo. There was a SNES version of Alpha 2, but it was released late in the SNES’s lifecycle and had loading times so it is not really remembered that well.

+1 for Street Fighter II, though I only had the original, not Super or any of the other remixes. I wasted many hours of my tween years playing it.

I also remember, before Super and Turbo and all the other versions, the healthy trade in rumors for secret codes to supposedly unlock M. Bison and the rest of the bosses as playable characters. All fake, of course.

That is something I kinda miss about video games from my youth: all the myths and rumors that sites like IGN and GameFaqs have mostly made obsolete.

Mortal Kombat II for SNES was a lot of fun. Looking back, it’s not the deepest game: characters all had identical attributes except for their special moves, but it was the in thing and my friends and I spent hours playing it in the arcade and then on the SNES (and Genesis).

The Street Fighter II series was great, of course.

I also liked Killer Instinct, World Heroes, and a few others that I don’t remember that well (Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown, and maybe one or two others I can’t think of at the moment).

I’d also gave to go with Street Fighter II.

If we were talking about the PC Engine (aka Turbografx-16 in the US), there were a number of great Neo Geo ports, plus an awesome Street Fighter II and a couple of other exclusives (Flash Hiders and Kabuki Itourodan). Most of those game require a CD attachment and an Arcade card, though.

SNES had some excellent beat em ups though!
