I found this in my old collection of Mad magazines. In 1991, computer viruses were relatively novel — although I did lose all of my early BBS data to a malicious virus just one year later (see the story in that link).

    I’ve never had any sort of malware that has ever wiped anything, but I have had a couple of failing hard drives that have done that very thing. I’d imagine it’s probably just as frustrating to deal with as it is dealing with any malware doing the same thing.

    I got a virus once. In order to get rid of the virus I had to completely wipe my hard drive and reload everything. Unfortunately I forgot to back some items up and lost some things in the process.

    Sircam got me in 2001, had to reformat the drive. Luckily I had copies on floppies of everything important.
