Super Mario Oddities (Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary)

Super Mario Oddities at Technologizer

25 years ago today, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom in Japan. In honor of this anniversary, I decided to dive into the depths of Super Mario lore and legend.

I surfaced clutching 13 examples of Mario-related weirdness, which I conveniently packaged in a slideshow format for Technologizer. The result is Super Mario Oddities, a gallery in the same vein as my Game Boy Oddities piece from last year. I hope you enjoy it.

Neat, though I rather expected to see the Super Mario live performance in the mix:

You shouldn’t post to technologizer.. my work blocks that website 🙁

Hmm, that’s a shame, t3hfr3ak. It may be time to investigate proxy servers. 🙂

Interesting. I am surprised I never heard about that Hudson port of SMB1. I’m surprised Nintendo allowed it, but then I guess that was a couple years before they really hit their stride as the undisputed kings of the video game world.

Also, I actually liked the taste of the Nintendo Cereal System. The fruit snacks were good too.

You liked the flavor? Man, it tasted like a big box of artificial dyes to me. Some cereals just had that fake, artificial taste, you know what I mean? The Nintendo Cereal System was the worst I’d ever eaten, and I tried a lot of cereals back then.

Speaking of Video game cereals — does anybody remember the Donkey Kong cereal? It had barrels sorta like Cap’N’Crunch. I remember eating that as a tiny kid. That and C-3POs. 🙂 Oh yeah, and Mr. T cereal had barrels too, I think.

I know it’s a little off topic, but I remember buying boxes and boxes of ‘Halfsies’ cereal (well, my mom did) because there was a chance to win a real live arcade game inside. I loved cereal, and still do, but it was tough eating through all those boxes. I don’t think that cereal had much sugar in it so it was especially rough for me.

I actually had to search to find the cereal name, and found the commercial! I remember that little fuzzy window you used to see if you had won.

@Benj: Yeah, I did. But then I was only a kid at the time, and while I probably wouldn’t enjoy it quite as much today, my tastes were unrefined back then. Mostly I liked the idea that it was “2 cereals in 1 – WOW!”

Super Mario Bros 2 fruit snacks, to this day I’ve never had one as great.
